The Mustard Seed and the Leaven
(Gospel of Matthew 13:31–33)
(Small Starts. Massive Impact.)
What if something tiny could change everything?
Jesus shared two short but powerful stories in Gospel of Matthew 13:31–33 — stories that speak strongly to young people today.
First, He talked about a mustard seed. It is one of the smallest seeds you can see. You could easily lose it in your hand. But when planted, it grows into a large tree where birds can rest in its branches. Small beginning. Big result.
Then Jesus spoke about leaven (yeast). A woman mixed a small amount of yeast into a large bowl of flour. At first, nothing seems to happen. But slowly, quietly, the dough rises. The small yeast changes the entire mixture.
Here’s the message: God’s Kingdom often starts small — but it never stays small.
Maybe you feel small. Maybe your faith feels tiny. Maybe your talent, your voice, or your influence seems unimportant. But God specializes in growing small seeds into strong trees.
One prayer. One act of kindness. One bold decision to stand for what’s right. These small steps can grow into something powerful. You don’t need to be famous to make impact. You just need to be faithful.
